A Culinary Intern will learn how to enhance the overall Resident experience through the provision of exceptional food by bringing a desire for culinary knowledge and the ability to complete work on-time, each day, with the energy it takes to thrive in a fast-moving environment. This is to be handled in The Sterling Touch® professional, friendly, courteous, helpful and timely manner, resulting in a very high level of satisfaction for Residents and their guests. This position is under the general guidance of the Executive Chef in accordance with Community standards, processes, procedures, practices and philosophy.

Essential Functions:

  • Participates in Start Sterling! line up each day.
  • Greets the Residents, guests, fellow employees and vendors in a friendly and courteous manner. Prepping and preparing vegetables, fruits, salads, dressings and garnishes.
  • Learns how to cook and prepare eggs, meats, pancakes and other breakfast foods in an à la carte setting.
  • Learns how to prepare sandwiches, salads and other simply prepared foods in an à la carte setting.
  • Learns how to cook and prepare pastas, potatoes, and grains.
  • Keeps all refrigeration, storage, and working areas in clean, working condition to comply with health department regulations.
  • Ensures food allergy cross contamination prevention.
  • Learns the concepts of scratch cooking, mise en place, professional kitchen behavior, kitchen resiliency, etc.
  • Learns basic line cooking skills, knife skills and knife safety.
  • Responsible for simple plating and presentation techniques.
  • Perform general/routine cleaning tasks using standard cleaning products as assigned by supervisor, for compliance with any health, safety or regulatory standards.
  • May also learn advanced butchery and protein fabrication skills, advanced knife skills, how to cook stocks, broths, sauces and soups, and food science and recipe building.



  • High School Diploma or GED, preferred. 
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited culinary arts program that requires completion of an approved culinary internship.


  • Desire to advance culinary knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to read, write and understand the English language in order to complete requisitions, read recipes and communicate with other employees.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity of hands and arms in order to use all kitchen equipment and utensils (e.g. knives, spoons spatulas, tongs, slicers, etc.)
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, crouch, bend, stoop, reach, grasp, push, pull and work continuously without sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift or carry, push or pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform duties within varying temperature ranges.
